information

why closer to the edge?

Closer to the Edge was established in 2006, its’ core team comes from a military, educational and outdoor background. The rich and diverse mix of experience means that CTTE is able to offer a wide range of activities within the region to provide ‘active outdoor learning’ to all.
At Closer to the Edge we want to provide a meaningful and educational experience for you and your students. We have a growing number of centres with excellent high ropes facilities (and lots more…) and our highly trained staff are dedicated to making your experience memorable and safe.

Best of all is the price – we firmly believe that making this fantastic experience affordable for all is of huge importance.

CTTE holds ‘Adventuremark’ and the ‘Learning Outside the Classroom (LOtC)’ Quality Badge. These kite-marks are there to ensure the highest standards of safety and educational provision. Our courses are designed to fit with your learning outcomes or outline objectives. We will help you with this, taking into account your group abilities and dynamics to create an experience which is educational, engaging, inclusive and above all…fun.

We hold a bank of pre-prepared resources, made available online to clients once they have booked. These include Risk Assessments, copies of our Insurance Certificates, Child-Protection Policy, Licenses and Quality Badges, all intended to inform and help minimise bureaucracy for the trip organiser.

Multi-Activity Days

something for everyone

We operate 4 High Ropes Adventure Centres across the region; Sandwell Valley Park in West Bromwich, Telford Town Park, Baggeridge Country Park near Wolverhampton and Markeaton Park in Derby.  CTTE High Ropes Adventure centres have been designed to accommodate high numbers, allowing schools and colleges to bring large groups if required. Our centres are ideal for groups of all ages, sizes and abilities.

A range of different courses can be provided to meet your needs as a group. Our programmes include a wide range of activities: high ropes, climbing team challenges, aerial trekking courses at 2 levels, climbing walls and powerfan descenders. Activities can also be supplemented and supported by ‘Team ToolBox’ activities and other team-development tasks on the ground, so there is something for everybody.

Some schools and colleges just want to spend the day with us – others want to do a progressive course to work on specific outcomes. The composition of the day depends very much on the programme that you have chosen, the desired outcomes and the numbers attending.

  • A typical full day lasts from 1000-1500. Typical half days 1000-1215 or 1245-1500.
  • Arrive at location ready for welcome brief at 1000. Safety Brief and harness/helmet fit.
  • Students divided into groups. Trip organisers can do this in advance as directed by CTTE but this is not essential.
  • Groups will be led by CTTE instructors throughout the day, normally they will do a combination of ground-based activity and high ropes team/individual challenge. This will be discussed with you during the booking phase.
  • Lunch normally lasts for 30-45 minutes and packed lunches can be eaten on-site.

All About education

Active

adventure courses

An active lifestyle is essential to health, physical and emotional wellbeing, and self confidence. Increasing levels of poor health and weight gain due to more sedate lifestyles are well documented; therefore our focus is on learning through active challenge in the outdoors. We have the facilities, qualifications and knowledge to develop and deliver motivational programmes within an inclusive and active environment.

Outdoor

balancing

Our extensive provision utilises a variety of engaging outdoor locations and we have partnered with organisations to provide a service throughout the UK. Closer to the Edge can also visit sites to deliver innovative programmes using our own activities at your location.

Learning

We focus on learning rather than training. Core values of an effective team are facilitated through active participation in our wide range of innovative tasks. The need to develop people from the inside out is core to our programmes so that learners can start to understand how to achieve their full potential.

inclusion and safety

Inclusion

We can provide you with a memorable expeience at all of our sites but Baggeridge High Ropes has been especially equipped to accommodate people with specific needs and we pride ourselves on providing something for everyone. We have now delivered programmes to over 200 groups with specific requirements – emotional, social and physical.

safety

All CTTE sites are equipped with modern, high-tech safety systems to ensure that students are permanently clipped on and safe. CTTE provide all Personal Protective Equipment (harnesses and helmets). We do not provide waterproofs, spare shoes, umbrellas etc, it is essential that students come prepared for the weather as getting cold and wet will affect the success of the day. Students should leave phones and other bulky equipment behind. Otherwise there is a risk of them falling out of their pocket at height and hurting somebody underneath. CTTE is insured for adventurous activity up to £5m public liability – documentation is available upon booking.

group management

closer to the edgeWe hold high expectations of engagement and behaviour and will frame these at the beginning of every learning experience. Our facilitators are trained to get the best from others.
